How many companies are set up and how many close in Romania?

Once a quarter, the Firmeo barometer collects the official figures of the Trade Register: registrations, deregistrations, dissolutions, suspensions and insolvencies, by county and by field of activity, compared with the previous year.

January–September 2026: 100,975 registrations and 61,181 deregistrations.

In short: in January–September 2026, 100,975 professionals were registered in Romania (−8.9% compared with January–September 2025), including 55,751 limited liability companies (SRL, −24.5%) and 40,800 sole traders (PFA, +23.9%). In the same period there were 61,181 deregistrations (−2.2%), 40,102 dissolutions (−3.4%), 12,957 suspensions (−12.7%) and 5,266 entries into insolvency (+12.1%). Source: official ONRC statistics.

ONRC ranking by the value of subscribed share capital (euro equivalent). A company may have investors from several countries.

SRL-D (start-up companies). Since the programme was launched, 49,221 SRL-Ds have been set up, of which 32,892 are operating and 16,329 have been deregistered. In September 2026, 3 were set up.
Methodology. The figures come from the official statistics published monthly by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC): registrations, deregistrations, dissolutions, suspensions and professionals entering insolvency, cumulative from 1 January, compared with the same period of the previous year. The data was downloaded on 19.10.2026; Firmeo does not change it, it only sorts it and calculates the percentage changes. ONRC may later revise the monthly figures.

According to ONRC, in January–September 2026 there were 100,975 registrations of professionals (companies, PFAs, sole proprietorships and family businesses), 8.9% fewer than in the same period of 2025 (110,894). Of these, 55,751 are SRLs and 40,800 are PFAs.

How many companies were deregistered in 2026?

In January–September 2026, ONRC recorded 61,181 deregistrations (−2.2% compared with January–September 2025), 40,102 dissolutions and 12,957 suspensions of activity. Another 5,266 professionals entered insolvency (+12.1%).

Are more SRLs or PFAs being set up?

More and more PFAs. In January–September 2026, 55,751 SRLs (−24.5% compared with 2025) and 40,800 PFAs (+23.9%) were registered. SRLs remain the majority, but the gap has narrowed considerably.

In which fields are the most companies set up?

In January–September 2026: transportation and storage (17,612), wholesale and retail trade (14,413) and professional, scientific and technical activities (10,672). The largest increases compared with 2025 were in agriculture, forestry and fishing (+50.7%), financial and insurance activities (+36.4%) and publishing, broadcasting, and content production and distribution activities (+16.1%).

In which counties were the most companies set up?

Where does the data come from and how often is it updated?

All figures are taken from the official statistics published monthly by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC), with no processing of our own other than sorting. Firmeo publishes a new edition of the barometer every quarter, on a separate page; previous editions remain available.
