How many companies are set up and how many close in Romania?

Once a quarter, the Firmeo barometer collects the official figures of the Trade Register: registrations, deregistrations, dissolutions, suspensions and insolvencies, by county and by field of activity, compared with the previous year.

January–August 2026: 94,078 registrations and 57,272 deregistrations.

In short: in January–August 2026, 94,078 professionals were registered in Romania (−2.1% compared with January–August 2025), including 51,873 limited liability companies (SRL, −19.6%) and 38,049 sole traders (PFA, +36.0%). In the same period there were 57,272 deregistrations (+1.3%), 37,227 dissolutions (+2.9%), 12,112 suspensions (−8.6%) and 4,782 entries into insolvency (+4.8%). Source: official ONRC statistics.

Methodology. The figures come from the official statistics published monthly by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC): registrations, deregistrations, dissolutions, suspensions and professionals entering insolvency, cumulative from 1 January, compared with the same period of the previous year. The data was downloaded on 19.10.2026; Firmeo does not change it, it only sorts it and calculates the percentage changes. ONRC may later revise the monthly figures.

How many companies were set up in Romania in 2026?

According to ONRC, in January–August 2026 there were 94,078 registrations of professionals (companies, PFAs, sole proprietorships and family businesses), 2.1% fewer than in the same period of 2025 (96,084). Of these, 51,873 are SRLs and 38,049 are PFAs.

How many companies were deregistered in 2026?

In January–August 2026, ONRC recorded 57,272 deregistrations (+1.3% compared with January–August 2025), 37,227 dissolutions and 12,112 suspensions of activity. Another 4,782 professionals entered insolvency (+4.8%).

Are more SRLs or PFAs being set up?

More and more PFAs. In January–August 2026, 51,873 SRLs (−19.6% compared with 2025) and 38,049 PFAs (+36.0%) were registered. SRLs remain the majority, but the gap has narrowed considerably.

In which fields are the most companies set up?

In January–August 2026: transportation and storage (16,431), wholesale and retail trade (13,409) and professional, scientific and technical activities (9,950). The largest increases compared with 2025 were in agriculture, forestry and fishing (+53.0%), financial and insurance activities (+45.8%) and telecommunication, computer programming, IT consultancy and other information service activities (+20.7%).

In which counties were the most companies set up?

Bucharest (22,550), Ilfov (6,125) and Cluj (4,649). The full table for all 42 counties is on this page.

Where does the data come from and how often is it updated?

All figures are taken from the official statistics published monthly by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC), with no processing of our own other than sorting. Firmeo publishes a new edition of the barometer every quarter, on a separate page; previous editions remain available.
